We live in an increasingly VUCA world. Whereas the world used to be predictable and futures could be planned, today we are caught up in fast moving unpredictability. We believe that breaking the bias is necessary in order to create a better society. But we won’t be satisfied with just breaking our bias, we want to find connections behind them. The works on exhibition are prototypes of ideas for a better world that goes beyond our bias.

Graduate School of System Design and Management, Keio University (also known as Keio SDM, in Kohoku-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan) will be participating in one of the world’s largest design festivals, the Milan Furniture Fair (Milan Design Week 2019) to be held in Milan, Italy, from Tuesday April 9th till Sunday April 14th 2019. It will be our fifth consecutive year of participation following SaloneSatellite in 2015, the University’s solo exhibition in the Tortona district in 2016, an exhibition in Superstudio at the heart of Milan Furniture Fair in 2017, and a joint exhibition held between Keio SDM graduates and companies in 2018. In an increasingly unpredictable and volatile world, flexible mindsets and innovation are needed more than ever. In a chaotic era, our progress is often restricted by established biases. On this occasion, under the theme of “Break the Bias”, 4 student groups from Keio SDM will participate in the Milan Furniture Fair, showcasing solutions to construct and cherish new and better relationships with others and society by breaking and overcoming biases, preconceptions and prejudice that we may not even be aware of in our daily lives. Through our participation in the Fair, we hope to broadly spread recognition of the social problemsolving potential of system design education based on system engineering.
